They are used to connect two pipes with the same or different nominal diameters and turn the direction of the pipe and fluid by 45 degrees or 90 degrees. This change in the direction of fluid flow increases the pressure loss in the system due to impact, friction, and re-acceleration.

Types of elbows based on direction angle
According to the direction of fluid flow in the pipeline, elbows can be divided into different angles, such as 45 degrees, 90 degrees, and 180 degrees, which are the most common elbows. There are also some special pipes with 60-degree and 120-degree elbows. The degree simply represents the angle at which the fluid flow will change after passing through the mentioned elbow.
Types of elbows based on length and radius
Elbows are divided into two groups, which define the distance the flowing fluid changes direction; from one end to the centerline of the opposite face. This is called the "center to face" distance, which corresponds to the radius of the elbow's bend.
If the radius is the same as the pipe diameter (center to face dimension is 1.0 X diameter), it is called a short radius elbow (SR elbow), typically used in low-pressure and low-speed pipelines or in narrow areas where space is a major concern. If the radius is greater than the pipe diameter (center to face dimension is 1.5 X diameter), we call it a long radius elbow (LR elbow), used for high-pressure and high-flow pipelines.
