Butt welding connection is to fix the two parts completely after spot welding. Of course, the requirements for welders are also slightly higher, as butt welding needs to undergo 100% RT inspection under strict working conditions.

What is the difference between butt welding fittings and socket fittings?

1. Connection Type:

1) Butt welding involves fully fixing two parts after spot welding. Of course, the requirements for welders are slightly higher, as butt welding requires 100% RT inspection under strict working conditions. Butt welding is commonly used in the chemical, petroleum, electric power, natural gas, and steel industries.

2) Socket welding involves welding the pipe into the valve body, and the shape of the internal thread connection after forming is similar. Generally, socket welding uses carbon steel pipes and stainless steel pipes below 2"; butt welding below 2" also uses stainless steel pipes, such as flanges; titanium pipes, duplex steel, nickel-based alloys, etc., are mainly used for butt welding.

2. Differences

1) Socket welds form fillet welds, while butt welds form butt welds. Analyzing the strength and stress state of the welds, butt joints are better than socket joints. Therefore, in high-pressure levels and harsh usage conditions, butt welding should be used.

2) Socket welding is generally used for small diameters of DN40 or smaller, which is economical. For DN40 and above, butt welding is generally used. The socket welding form is mainly used for small diameter valves and pipelines, fittings, and pipeline welding. Small diameter pipelines generally have thin wall thickness, are prone to misalignment and burn-through, making welding difficult, thus more suitable for socket welding. In addition, the socket of socket welding has a reinforcing effect, so it is also used under high pressure. However, socket welding also has disadvantages. One is that the stress state after welding is poor, and there are gaps inside the pipeline system. Therefore, pipeline systems that are sensitive to gap corrosion and have high cleaning requirements are not suitable for using socket welding. Furthermore, for ultra-high pressure pipelines, even small diameter pipes have large wall thicknesses, and butt welding can be used to avoid socket welding.

3) The diameter of the former must be one large and one small to insert the weld. The diameter of the latter can be the same or different. 2. The welding groove forms are different. 3. The welding processes are different. The strength after welding is different.

4) Most of the lower pressure levels are smaller socket welds, while higher pressure levels are often butt welds. Butt welds undergo 100% non-destructive testing to ensure no leakage.

What types of flanges are used in the petrochemical industry?

In many applications, engineers need to find a way to safely close a chamber or cylinder, often because the composition or pressure of the internal material must be different from that of the external material.

What aspects should be considered when using stainless steel flanges?

The stainless steel flange is a flange that connects steel pipes, fittings, etc. into the flange and connects to equipment or pipelines through corner welds. The inner hole on one side of the flange is equipped with a welded boss, which has an inner hole. The inner hole is connected to the inner hole at the center of the flange, and there is elasticity between the flange and the welded boss.

What types of flanges do we often use?

The main types of flanges are welding neck, long welding neck, lap joint, threaded, and blind flanges, as well as slip-on, socket weld. In addition to these standard flanges, there are also some special flanges, such as rotating flanges, expansion/reduction flanges, and hole flanges.

Product information about elbows

Steel pipe elbows (sometimes also referred to as elbows) are key components in pressure piping systems used to change the direction of fluid flow. They are used to connect two pipes with the same or different nominal diameters.
